Your Fridge Isn't Just for Artwork

That huge, smooth, clean white space on your fridge is a focal point in your house. Over the years, I found myself using the space to display my son's artwork, family pictures, schedules, and sometimes, to-do lists.

Setting the Mood of the Home

But then I started using my fridge to set the mood of the home. I've started putting up:

  • Positive affirmations

  • Positive words to describe myself and my son

  • New thoughts and ideas geared towards behavior, learning, and growing

For example, we've been affirming our ability to find solutions for all our problems. Now that could seem daunting for children, even for adults. However, with a simple shift in the words used to verbalize the problem, we can alert our mind into looking for answers.

The Power of "How Can I?"

By simply asking instead, "How can I?", the mind gets moving, and you instantly see things and ways out you might have missed.

Making It Stick

Now this is all great and lovely. But it won't help if you don't remember to use the technique. And consistently using a technique is how you master it, that's how a habit is formed.

So we simply wrote the phrase and stuck it to the fridge. When we get stuck on a question, it serves as a prompt to remind us: rephrase.

A Quick Update on My Home Adventures

Hey Parents of the VI!

I am an RN, super passionate about conscious parenting, and I hope you've seen my oh so many posts on parenting and kids here.

I've been working with a few families, and the feedback I'm getting is that neither parents nor the kids have the time to complete the home "adventures" I use. That's because the kids are busy with after school, parents are working, and there just isn't much time to do the home adventures I send home.

So I revamped, reevaluated, and created a few much shorter "adventures," home exercises, really. They're all geared at:

  • Parent-child relationships and interaction

  • Positive communication

  • Creating systems at home that influence more positive behavior and ease

But they are super shorter.
